I am new to the board, but thought I would see who could give me more info on Cain Atkinson. Is he being recruited by any D-1 teams. I am a huge Jaycee Carroll fan and couldn't say enough about him. He will be the #1 scorer at Utah State of all time when he is done IMO barring an injury...(knock on wood). I don't know if Stew Morrill is looking at Atkinson, but wondered if any of you are in the know. Thanks in advance

Jaycee Carroll was one-of-a-kind, without question. I so very happy for all his success.

I had a nice post about Cain's 45, but lost connection and will have to re-post at some point. It's a rare feat in Wyoming high school hoops. In the past 20 years in Evanston, only Mark Williams ('82) Michael "Cory" Jones ('94) and of course, Carroll, have achieved 40+

Thanks for your interest and I'm usually a little quicker at replying. I will say this: Cain Atkinson is a legitimate D1 prospect. He followed his 44 or 45 point performance against Jackson (12-22-06) with 35 vs. the Union Cougars of Roosevelt, Utah (1-04-07). Not bad for a 13 day lay-off....

Atkinson went for 27 as Evanston hosted Kemmerer on 1-6-07 and 29 in Afton today against the Star Valley Braves, the number one ranked team in Wyoming's second largest classification, (3A - Evanston is #4 in 4A, behind Natrona County-Casper, Cheyenne East, and Campbell County-Gillette).

Evanston won their 5th consecutive in convincing fashion, 71-44 behind Atkinson's game-high 29.

Cain is so quick; he can create offense as a pure shooter from beyond the arc with his quick release, and will challenge inside, creatively and fearlessly. If you foul him, well, he's shooting 90% plus on the year, and will likely break Brendon Ehler's (4A Player of the Year - led his team to the title in 2004) school record of near 90% for a season. I know Atkinson leads the 4A, and I believe the entire state, in scoring, the most prolific scorer since Jaycee, and the most fun and exciting too watch since Carroll, as well.

There is some interest in Cain, but there should be more, in my opinion, which is shared by many. The kid is an athlete, loves the game, plays smart and is a fierce competitor.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate the time you took to answer my questions. I believe I saw Cain play when Evanston came to a USU basketball camp this last summer. Jaycee got him to come and play with the USU team after the sessions were done at night. He looks like an athlete. I wonder if Stew Morril has much interest in him mainly because we don't have any scholarships available for next season. In fact he has too many on scholarchip so that means somebody must not be coming back (Which doesn't surprise me). I know stew will figure out a way if he wants a kid bad enough. Is Cain LDS and going on a mission? IF so, he could be like many others and come join the team after he gets back. Do you know which schools are recruiting him? I guess I am just curious. I would love to have another Evanston player as an Aggie. Especially if he is half the player that Jaycee is. I think Jaycee is my all time favorite player at USU and that says a lot because I have been an avid fan since I came to school here 15 years ago and we have had some amazing runs and good athletes. Well, I will try to follow Evanston high school sports more. Thanks for the information.

You're most welcome, USU Fan. I think Cain is looking to go right into college ball, and if his parents don't mind, I'll post who has expressed interest in the near future.

I follow the Aggies quite closely because of Jaycee; he's a hometown hero like Brady Poppinga, and both are heros of mine. Great athletes, but more importantly, great young men.

I'm one of many who wish Jaycee would have been a Wyoming Cowboy, but I'm so happy that he's been such a good fit for the Aggies. Stew Morrill is the best coach in the region, in my opinion, MoWest or WAC. I'm sure most true Aggie fans like you realize how fortunate you are to have him.

Good luch against the Vandals tonight!

Help get the word out about Cain!
